We’re officially in seasonal limbo here on the east coast. We all know how it feels to have 3 or 4 days of 50 degrees or more, complete with birds tweeting, kids running around outside, etc… only to jump back without warning to sub-freezing temperatures, snow warnings, and a need for layers and layers of clothes just to get out of bed in the morning. Though it may not feel like it, spring is in fact on the way, but in the meantime, with so many radical shifts in temperature, humidity, and weather patterns, caring for your skin in the midst of the elements should definitely be on your radar.

Find the Right Moisturizer

Caring for your skin has to begin and end with moisturizer, and as we emerge from the dry winter doldrums rebuilding and replenishing skin is especially important. Many plastic surgeons recommend finding one that contains Hyaluronic Acid, a chemical already distributed throughout skin tissue. Hyaluronic Acid acts as a restorative agent that lubricates joints and rejuvenates facial tissue particularly well.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate…

Exfoliating can break through dry dead skin cells and restore a healthy glow to your skin. BUT not all exfoliation processes are created equal! Knowing your own skin type is important because its unique attributes (its oiliness, its dryness, its sensitivity, etc.) will dictate the proper way that it should be maintained. Above all, be kind to your skin when exfoliating. Don’t be too aggressive. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive mechanics. Do what suits it best.

Take Notice of the Sun

As the Sun begins to peek out from behind the clouds and the air starts to warm up it’s easy to forget about overexposure. Even on a day with moderate cloud cover, spending considerable time outdoors can leave you liable for sunburns. Use a waterproof sunscreen; one higher than 30 SPF if you really want to protect your skin. Use a mist or a gel for a lighter feel; one that doesn’t clog your pores.
