Your face is the first part of your body people notice and it often leads to their first impression of you. Your face can project confidence, health, vitality and other traits that will make a positive impression. But unfortunately, there are some facial cosmetic issues that are beyond your control that can lead to a negative first impression. These issues can cause you to be overly self-conscious, shy and even look unhealthy.
Facial veins, also known as spider veins, is a common condition that people are very self-conscious about. The good news is that you don’t have to live with such spider veins forever. Jefferson Facial Plastics offers sclerotherapy to make your face, neck and chest clear of veins, giving you back your self-confidence.
What are facial veins?
Facial veins are also known as spider veins (Telangiectasias) are dilated veins that are close to the skin surface. They form in groups, giving the look of a spider web or tree branches. They are generally red or purple in color and most often appear on the legs and face. Spider veins are caused by weak vein valves that do not open to let the blood flow freely. The result is blood fills the vein and it swells. Spider veins are more common in women than in men.
Aside from being a facial cosmetic problem, spider veins can also cause pain and discomfort. They are generally not considered a serious health issue, though it’s best to get them examined by a qualified doctor to rule out other health complications.
What is sclerotherapy?
This treatment is an easy, non-invasive procedure that takes away facial veins. A solution of Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate (sclerosing solution) is injected into the vein. The immediate effect is that the vein will begin to shrink. Then, over time the vein will simply dissolve and the body will reabsorb the vein. Once this happens, there will be no sign a vein was even there, leaving you with clear skin.
Before the procedure
Your doctor will meet with you and will want a full medical history. Let your doctor know if you smoke (or are a former smoker), the medications you currently take (including any supplements), history of heart disease and other illnesses, allergies and if you’ve previously been treated for spider veins. It’s important to be completely honest with the doctor to avoid any complications.
The doctor will then examine the veins and check to see if there are any signs of other vein disorders.
The procedure
Sclerotherapy is very straightforward: injections into the veins. The procedure can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to an hour, depending on how large the area is that the doctor is treating.
After all the injections are complete, the doctor will examine you to make sure there are no side-effects at the injection site. If everything looks good, you’ll be free to go. The doctor will instruct you to avoid sun exposure for a few days to allow your skin to recover. Follow the doctor’s directions carefully so you can heal faster. Additional injections might be needed if the veins don’t completely disappear, or new spider veins become visible.
