Whether we like it or not, much of our self-esteem is derived from how we look. And there’s no other place on the human body than the face. It’s front and center and the first part of us people see. The most prominent feature on the face is the nose. So it’s no surprise that a nose that doesn’t look right can make a big impact on our self-esteem. If our self-esteem suffers, we can experience other problems like depression, anxiety and isolation.

But having an imperfect nose is something the doctors at Jefferson Facial Plastics can help you with. They can perform a procedure called a rhinoplasty (more commonly known as a nose job). This procedure reshapes the bone and cartilage of your nose to achieve the desired look.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Generally speaking, most adult patients who are in good health and have serious concerns about their nose will make a good rhinoplasty candidate. Younger patients might be considered, but the facial bones and structure need to be fully formed before the doctor will perform a nose job. In some cases, the doctor will consider performing a rhinoplasty on a younger patient if the nose structure interferes with breathing, or if there has been significant trauma because of an accident.

However, the only way to find out if you do qualify for a rhinoplasty is to have a consultation with one of Jefferson’s highly experienced, board certified plastic surgeons. They are among the best in the country and have many decades of experience between them.

During the consultation, the doctor will review your medical history. It’s very important to be completely honest with your history because it can have serious consequences on the outcome and safety of the surgery. The doctor might also take x-rays to examine the nasal bone structure, as well as perform a nasal cavity exam. You’ll see before-and-after pictures of rhinoplasty patients so you’ll have a good idea of what to expect.

Once the doctor decides you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty, he will talk to you in detail about the procedure and recovery process. This is when you should ask any questions you might have so you can be fully informed about your surgery.

The procedure and recovery

All rhinoplasty procedures are performed at the state-of-the-art Jefferson Facial Plastics surgical center in Philadelphia. For the vast majority of patients, there are almost no visible incisions, meaning there will be no visible scars. The doctor will reshape the cartilage and bone to achieve the desired shape and look of the nose. Splints might be used to hold the nose’s shape during the recovery period.

After the procedure, the doctor will give you instructions about caring for your nose while you recover. This will include using cold compresses to minimize swelling, pain medication and follow-up appointments to remove any nasal packing or splints and for the doctor to monitor your progress.

Patients should plan on taking a week off work and limiting their activity to let their nose properly heal. The doctor will give specifics about what you can and can’t do during this time.
