Everyone wants to have great looking skin. Luckily, there are hundreds of products and treatments on the market to help us look our best. Everything from simple at-home skin ointments to Botox injects at the doctor’s office, there is no shortage of choices.

One way to look your absolute best is a procedure called micro-needling. It’s basically what it sounds like: a wand with very small needles penetrates into the skin, making little holes (or micro-injuries). Don’t worry, though. If the idea of a dozen small needles makes you cringe, you have nothing to worry about. Micro-needling doesn’t feel anything like getting a shot. Most patients describe the treatment like have sandpaper rubbed over the skin. There is some discomfort, but it’s minimal and can be managed.

How does micro-needling work?

When the esthetician moves the wand with the micro needles over your skin, it causes little injuries. Naturally, when the skin is injured, it will begin the healing process. Micro-needling relies on this healing process to improve your skin’s texture, remove fine lines and minimize the visibility of scars.

A big part in how the skin heals itself is through increased collagen production. Collagen is one of the basic building blocks of our skin, along with elastin, that makes our skin look healthy. Micro-needling relies on this increased collagen to thicken the skin’s dermis while softening out the wrinkles, scars and uneven skin tone.

Micro-needling results in healthy, younger looking skin

You’ll notice a difference in how your skin looks almost immediately. Once the redness from the treatment goes away (this take about 2-4 days), your skin will have a healthy-looking glow. As the weeks go by, your skin will continue to look better and better as the fine lines and wrinkles and scars begin to fade. You’ll also see your skin tone even out so it looks younger, with fewer blemishes. The skin’s collagen production can continue for up to six months after treatment!

Despite such great results after one treatment, it’s highly recommended for most patients to get 2-3 micro-needling treatments spaced out every 6-8 weeks. For patients with deeper wrinkles or more severe scars, more treatments will be required to see the desired results.

Aside from great results, you’ll also be able to resume most of your normal daily activities after your micro-needling session. You will be advised to avoid too much sun exposure because your skin will be more sensitive as it heals.

Am I a good micro-needling candidate?

Only our highly-trained esthetician can determine if micro-needling is right for you. Generally, this treatment is safe and effective for all different skin types. Let the esthetician know if you have any conditions that might affect the outcome of your treatment.
