The last several years have seen a sharp increase in men having their own cosmetic procedures. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released that the number of procedures for males increased over 50 percent from 2011 to 2015; accounting for 1.2 million procedures in total. Because of the physical differences between sexes, there are certain procedures that cater more toward male preferences than female.

How so?

Maintaining a youthful appearance is a goal hardly limited to women so for plastic surgery to be gaining steam so quickly among men shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. As both men and women age skin becomes more vulnerable to a variety of stimuli. The two structures of skin that maintain elasticity and firmness; collagen and elastin are the first to begin breaking down. The difference between men and women, is that men tend to have a higher density of collagen, amounting to thicker, more oily skin slows the aging process in different ways.

Which Procedures Are Most Popular with Men?

Of the nearly 200 thousand surgical procedures performed on men in 2015, face lifts, blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty comprised nearly half. Of the 1 million nonsurgical procedures, things like Xeomin injections, Botox, and hair removal were among the most popular. Less invasive procedures like dermal fillers, Botox, and facials tend to be more popular among younger men in their 30’s and 40’s, who seem to favor nonsurgical procedures while those closer to their 50’s and 60’s are the ones for whom face lifts and eyelid lifts tend to become more popular.
