Hair Transplant

HomeFace & Neck — Hair Transplant

Hair transplants offer you the opportunity to restore the natural hair growth that balding has taken from you.

Hair loss is a natural part of aging. It varies between individuals and is influenced by family history, genetics, and hormonal changes. Generally speaking, the earlier in life you see hair loss, the greater the baldness you will ultimately experience.

Some patients seek hair transplants because of hair loss caused by accidents, burns or other trauma. Reconstructive treatment in these cases may call for a variety of approaches to restore normal hair growth.

A successful series of hair transplants will give change your appearance, restoring a more youthful look with a much fuller head of hair. The surgery provides hair that grows naturally and requires the same styling and care that your other hair requires.

Transplant surgery removes hair from the back or sides of your head and implants it in the area of your hair loss. This donor hair will usually continue to grow throughout the rest of your life, and transplanting it in no way impedes its ability to continue to grow.

Hair transplantation surgery techniques have made great strides over the past decade. The days of the corn-row plugs are long gone. Current practices use single hair-, micro-, and mini- grafting to achieve remarkable results.

The use of variable sized hair grafts combined with new and improved instrumentation technology can give you a natural hair appearance that looks completely natural.

Initial Consultation

At your initial consultation, Dr Heffelfinger or Dr Krein will interview you to get a thorough understanding of your medical history. Candidates must be in good health, have no active diseases or serious, pre-existing medical conditions, and must have realistic expectations of the outcome of the surgery.

He will then talk to you about your goals and the changes you seek with the hair transplant procedure. Some patients are better candidates for this surgery and will realize better results. Your doctor will discuss all these variables so you understand what your outcome might be.

In addition to discussing this surgery, your doctor may point out other options that might benefit you. He will show you before and after pictures of patients that have had this type of surgery, so that you may better understand the results you can expect.

The doctors at Jefferson Facial Plastics, with their excellent training and extensive experience with hundreds of these operations, will answer all your questions.

At the end of the consultation with the doctors at Jefferson Facial Plastics, you will fully understand the surgical procedure, the surgical facility, anesthesia options, and the cosmetic benefits you might expect.

The Procedure

Your doctor will remove follicular units of hair (groups of one, two, or three hairs) and meticulously relocate them to your bald or thinning area. The size and shape of the grafts will vary and depend on both your donor and recipient sites. For follicular unit transfer, our doctors are experienced with single sessions of 2000 grafts or more.

For cosmetic hair restoration, the doctors at Jefferson Facial Plastics generally perform the follicular unit surgery. However, other techniques exist and may be applicable to your personal situation. We are trained extensively an all of these procedures. Micro grafts contain only one or two hairs, mini-grafts about two to four hairs and round shaped punch grafts contain around 10-15 hairs. Another option at your doctor’s disposal is slit grafts. These long thin grafts contain 30-40 hairs and are placed into small incisions made in the scalp. Drs Heffelfinger and Krein are also experts in hair flaps and in lowering the hairline in females.

The number and duration of transplant series will be dictated by the amount of hair you seek to replace. Several sessions may be required to reach the fullness you seek. Your doctor will recommend a suitable healing session of two to three months between sessions.

Your hair color and texture will also influence how much coverage is required. Thick, gray or lighter-colored hair gives better coverage than dark-colored, fine hair.

The harvest site for follicular unit grafting is from the back of the head. This incision is very well hidden and generally heals to become imperceptible. Drs Heffelfinger and Krein are very careful to close this incision in the best possible way.

Recovery

Your doctor will clean and cover your scalp with gauze after a transplant grafting session. This can usually be removed in a couple days. If stitches were required during your session, they will be removed within 5-10 days.

Recovery from the sessions is usually quite painless and trouble-free. Some patients experience mild pain after the operation. If necessary, your doctor will recommend pain medication. Scabs will form over the grafts but go away in about a week.

We may recommend limited activity or exercise for some time to lessen the chances that your incisions will bleed.

Follow his recommendations and call him with any questions you may have. Before long, you will be enjoying the benefits of your hair transplant surgery.
