While a medical grade facial is similar to a spa facial when it comes to cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration, there is a big difference. Medical facials are performed in our office with medical-grade products, producing far more effective and lasting results.
Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are popular medical grade treatments. Depending on how sensitive your skin is, it’s common to experience side effects as your skin goes through its renewal process. While the side effects differ from one person to the next, they can include slight burning or tingling, dryness, itching, tightness, and peeling.
The good news is that with the right aftercare, the side effects will subside quickly to reveal a fresh and glowing complexion.
Proper Post-Medical Grade Facial Care
With these tips, you can minimize discomfort and soothe your skin,
1.     Use Cool Water
Washing your face with hot or warm water won’t feel as good as cold or cool water, which can sooth burning and tingling sensations.
2.     Moisturize
Chemical peels, especially, can temporarily compromise the skin’s protective barrier. The trick is to reinforce that barrier with the help of an effective moisturizer. Drinking more water and staying hydrated can help minimize skin tightening.
3.     Don’t Leave Home Without Sunscreen
Your skin is delicate after a medical grade facial, so stay out of the sun and don’t step outdoors with an SPF 30 or higher.
4.     Avoid Steam Rooms and Saunas
Steam rooms, saunas, and even strenuous exercise all increase blood circulation to your face intensifying redness, itchiness, and burning. Skip these activities on the day you have your facial and for a few days after.
5.     Don’t Exfoliate
Most medical grade facials include maximum strength exfoliants, so there’s no need for a separate exfoliant both a few days before and after your treatment. Over-exfoliating can result in greater sensitivity and redness, so rather wait until your skin is ready.
The key is to wait until your skin feels back to normal before resuming your usual skin care regimen. Your skin therapist will also give your tailored advice to make sure you get the most out of your medical grade facial.
