If you’re looking to get Intense Pulsed Light therapy on your face, then you’re in for a treat when you come visit us at Jefferson. We don’t just give you the treatment and then send you on your way; instead, we make it an experience for you to remember. Our licensed esthetician Jean Gallagher takes you through every step of the process, ensuring both your safety, comfort and satisfaction.
The first step is just a quick 30-minute consultation with Jean. She will carefully examine your skin and discuss the type of results you are looking for. She’ll also give you instructions to follow before the treatment to make the procedure goes as smoothly as possible.
Microdermabrasion
The first appointment is picture time! We will take pictures of your face and hands (since they’ll be treated with the IPL as well). But we’re not going to just snap a few pictures in the examining room. Instead, your pictures will be taken in a professional photography studio right in our office. The reason we take pictures at the very beginning is so you have a “before” to compare to when your treatment is finished.
Then, it’s on to the first step of the process: microdermabrasion.
Jean will explain everything to you and how the process works. After prepping your face and covering your hair, she will begin the microdermabrasion. The treatment is mostly painless; at the worst it feels like light scratching. She will go over your entire face and neck. The experience should be very relaxing. If you’re feeling much discomfort, we can make changes accordingly. Afterwards your skin might feel a little sensitive. This is completely normal. Follow Jean’s post-treatment instructions and the sensitivity will go away in no time.
The IPL treatment
The next appointment begins with a few more pictures in our professional studio. This time, we can compare your skin before and after the microdermabrasion treatment. You should see a notable difference. Your skin will look more smooth and clear.
Next comes the IPL treatment itself. Jean washes your face to clean off the oil and grime and then places a surgical cap around your hair. She will then rub a gel onto your face to prevent your skin from getting too hot. Finally, a pair of cool-looking protective eye coverings are put on.
IPL treatments will be a little painful, but it’s definitely bearable. Again, if it becomes too uncomfortable, let us know so we can help. The process is very quick and you’ll be finished before you know it. To help with any post-treatment discomfort, Jean will rub some numbing cream over the treated areas. Afterwards, you can relax for a while before leaving the office. We’ll give you instructions on how to care for your skin at home.
Rest of the Process
You’ll have 3-4 weeks to relax and recuperate between treatments. The number of treatments you need will vary between 3 and 6. For a short while after treatment, your skin will have a temporary pinkness but most people resume work or normal activities immediately after treatment. You’ll notice your skin healing rapidly and you’ll begin to feel (and look!) much better.
Three months after your final treatment, after your skin has healed, you’ll come back to our office for the last pictures. Now we can review the progress made over the course of your IPL treatments. Your skin should look even clearer and much younger. The before-and-after pictures are like night and day.
