When people think of rhinoplasty, they think of those who are dissatisfied with the look of their nose and want to correct it with surgery. They can be dissatisfied for many reasons: they feel their nose is too big, too small, has a bump, the tip isn’t defined enough, or they just don’t like how they look in profile.

Rhinoplasty is a popular procedure because the nose is literally in the center of the face. Aside from the eyes, the nose is one of the first parts of your face that others see. Any abnormalities with the nose are very noticeable. This can lead to a person being very self-conscious and they might even have low self-esteem as a result. But no one has to live with a nose that they are unhappy with.

Rhinoplasty is a procedure that can also correct much more than just a misshapen nose. Sometimes the inner architecture of the nose is obstructing a person’s breathing. This is called a deviated septum. The septum is the bone and cartilage that separate the two sides of the nose. Surgically correcting a deviated septum can help the patient breathe better.

In short, rhinoplasty can improve one’s life in many ways.

However, only an experienced doctor, like the ones at Jefferson Facial Plastics, can tell you if you’re a good candidate for a rhinoplasty. During your initial consultation, you’ll sit down with the doctor to discuss your medical history. It’s very important that you’re open about any medications you take, past surgeries and your medical conditions to prevent any complications during surgery or recovery.

The doctor might want to take photographs of your nose, and in some cases, x-rays to get a complete idea of what kind of work needs to be done. From this, the doctor can make his recommendation to you and discuss the rhinoplasty procedure. By the time you leave the office, you and the doctor will have a plan on how to fix your nose. This plan is a combination of your desires and the doctor’s recommendations based on experience with similar cases.

The surgery itself is usually an outpatient procedure, done under general anesthesia. Since most of the work is done inside the nose there is almost always no visual incisions. A splint might be placed inside of the nose to maintain the nose’s structure while it heals.

The recovery time from rhinoplasty is about 4-6 weeks. One week after the surgery you’ll return for a follow-up appointment with the doctor. If a splint was used in the nose, the doctor will remove it at the one week follow-up.
